Well worth the diversions

The Michelin Guide's review
Inside the Sardis gymnasium, the palaestra (square courtyard), surrounded by columns and occupying half the complex, was used for sports activities, while the vaulted rooms to the west were for bathing. Between the two lies a vast courtyard encircled by two stories of columns. The basilica-type edifice to the south of the palaestra was transformed into a synagogue during the Roman Empire (3C).
