Magdalen College
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The college, once the Hospital of St John, was founded in 1456. The wall along the High Street dates from the 13C. The chapel, bell tower and cloister are late Perpendicular. The 46m-high bell tower, remains the most perfect structure in Oxford, as James I once said. The unforgettable gargoyles on the buttresses of the cloister are a defining feature of the main quad. After looking around you could take time out in the magnificent grounds, where deer roam free.
