Palácio do Rio Negro
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Private residence of Waldemar Scholz, a German entrepreneur, the Palácio do Rio Negro gives you an insight into the extent of the wealth of the rubber barons. In 1911, after the crisis, the palace was sold off, then became the seat of government in 1918. It was transformed into a museum in 1995, but is still used for official receptions from time to time. The visit leads to the panoramic terrace from where the master of the house could admire the surrounding forest, now, sadly, replaced by a concrete jungle.
