Font-de-Gaume Grotto
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Historical and archaeological site
The Michelin Guide's review
Font-de-Gaume cave is 120m long and is the last remaining prehistoric site with polychrome figures still open to the public. Most of the paintings date back to the middle of the Magdalenian age (between 16,000 and 13,000 BCE), while some of the wall paintings belong to the same period as Lascaux (Ancient Magdalenian). Among the 200 or so paintings are a superb frieze of multi-coloured bison, horses and mammoths, in addition to an incredible pair of reindeer that are so realistic they seem to be alive. The cave is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
