A square was commissioned in the middle of the chequerboard, designed by the emperor's military engineers. Neo-Classical buildings surround the huge esplanade and in the centre Napoleon I can be seen on a prancing bronze horse. Swamped in greenery nowadays, this square contains pools with a mechanical bestiary, unique to France.
