The Michelin Guide's review
Dominating the town, this 123m-high hill topped by fortifications was until the Napoeonic period an impregnable fortress. When in 1809 Graz was occupied by the French, the Schlossberg resisted all attempts to take it. The treaty of Schönbrunn (14 October 1809) stipulated its destruction, muh to the locals' dismay. At great expense, however, they managed to save the clock tower and bell tower. Decades later, it became a park which can be accessed on foot or via a lift or funicular.
