Craignethan Castle
Michelin Guide
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Attractive house with a double courtyard that stands on a promontory with three abrupt slopes. The vulnerable side is defended by a moat and an exterior courtyard. Built between 1530 and 1540, the castle was built to resist artillery. The dry moat separating the two courtyards contains a vaulted passage that is rarely found in fortresses. A 1.5 m thick courtyard wall used to stand in the moat.
