Fonséranes locks are among the most impressive constructions on the Canal du Midi. Originally composed of nine locks (only seven of which are in operation today), the eight oval lock chambers today resemble a 312m-long flight of stairs that bridges a gap in water levels of 21,50m. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and equipped with a promenade and new landscaped areas, dotted with footbridges and a visitor centre, among other popular attractions.
