Qaitbay Mosque
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
If the mosque gives you a sense of déja vu, it is probably because it features on the Egyptian one pound note. Located in the northern sector of the City of the Dead, this harmonious edifice was built in the 15C by Sultan Qaitbay. Dominated by its fine minaret - typical of Mamluk architecture - it has a classical structure around a central courtyard with four iwans. Note the mausoleum of the Sultan, whose fine cupola is decorated with geometrical motifs and interlacing.
