The Michelin Guide's review
Fancy an excursion away from the hustle and bustle of the coast? The Montagnes Noires stretch for roughly 60km/40mi from east to west to the south of Carhaix-Plouguer. This range of Amorican sandstone and black schist rises to a height of 326m/1069ft and, with the Arée mountains, makes up the "backbone of the peninsula". They are said to be named after the thick deciduous forests that used to cover the range. The area is currently being massively replanted with trees.
