Along with Gradec, Kaptol is one of the two "eyries" upon which Zagreb emerged. It is also known as "the Chapter" - the name given to the vast square which stretches out in front of the cathedral of the Assumption, to the street which heads north from there, and to the entire, formerly fortified district. The religious centre of Zagreb in the 12C, Kaptol has of late become one of its most vibrant districts, with no lack of cafes, restaurants and fashion and design boutiques.
