Surabaya's Arab District
Michelin Guide
City and village
The Michelin Guide's review
Since the 15C, Surabaya has had an Arab district, with Jalan Mas Mansur running between it and Chinatown. You are bound to forget where you are in the little street leading from Sunan Ampel Mosque (no entry for non-Muslims), where merchants selling fabrics, carpets and Korans compete for customers against a soundtrack of Arab melodies. Sunan Ampel, one of the most venerated Wali Songo in the country (they brought Islam to Java), rests in peace in the small cemetery adjoining the mosque.
