Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra: Bell Tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This 88m-high, five-layer bell tower is 6m taller than the Ivan the Great bell tower in the Moscow Kremlin and dominates the monastery and town. It took thirty years (1740-1770) and three architects (Shuumakher, Michourin and Ukhtomski) to carry out this bold project. This astonishing building creates an impression of lightness, highlighted by the openings all of the same size, as the storeys narrow progressively.
