Monastery of Saint Dominic of Silos
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This monastery, renowned for its Gregorian chants, takes its name from the monk Dominic who, in the 11C, restored the buildings of an old Visigoth abbey. Abandoned by the monks in 1835, it became a refuge for French Benedictines from Poitou. The cloister, superbly balanced and colourful, is one of the finest in Spain. The eight bas-reliefs in the corners of the galleries, along with the capitals, are masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture.
