Occupying the Mercado del Este since 2013, this museum highlights the evolution of culture and ways of life from the Palaeolithic era to the Middle Ages through displays based on digs carried out in the fifty or so prehistoric caves in Cantabria. The richest section is from the Upper Palaeolithic era, with artefacts that including animal remains, furniture, tools, ceramics and coins, as well as giant disc-shaped stele - the enigmatic emblems of pre-Roman Cantabrian culture.
