In the centre of the city, a portico and shops surround the forum, which is also the site of the public monuments of the old town: the curie, macellum (covered market), comitium (where magistrates were elected), and the temple of Peace. To the east, the amphitheatre, built on the cusp of the Republican and Imperial periods, is cut in two by a road. The gymnasium was most probably a sanctuary enclosing a swimming pool.
