You would never guess from the relatively plain façade of the Igreja de N. S. do Pilar (18C) what treasures lie within this church. Chandeliers and balconies covered in gold (several hundred kilos of this precious metal are said to have been needed for the job!) and red curtains. Church or opera house? A unique monument, considered by some to be the most important Baroque church in Brazil.
