The Michelin Guide's review
This 18C building of Portland stone was designed by Sir William Chambers and presents a narrow frontage onto the Strand. The true beauty of the building can only be appreciated once you have come into the huge courtyard, where elegant water fountains delight young and old alike. Somerset House is home to the Courtauld Institute of Arts, a centre dedicated to art research, which includes the Courtauld Gallery, a museum renowned for its Impressionist collections.
