The Michelin Guide's review
The weathervane house is distinctive thanks to its red brick walls. It was built in 1909 by a wealthy German merchant, Gottfried Thomas. Intended to ward off evil spirits, its metal cockerel weathervane made its way into a movie produced by NHK in 1977 and has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The interior is adorned with a patchwork of Biedermeier furnishings and Art nouveau decoration (woodwork and light fittings), and the occasional Neo-gothic detail.
