Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
A slope hewn out of the rock leads up to Varlaam Monastery, which is perched at the top of a piton (373m). It was founded in the 16C on the site of a 14C hermitage by two brothers from the wealthy Aparas family. Incorporating the original 14C chapel, known as the Three Hierarchs Chapel, the katholikon (completed in 1544) is decorated with remarkable frescoes. The visit continues with the refectory treasure, which presents gold-embroidered liturgical vestments, icons and a 10C evangeliarium.
