Wat Chiang Man
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Wat Chiang Man was built by the city's founder, King Mengrai, which makes it the oldest temple in Chiang Mai (13C). Thais come here to honour the two treasures housed in the temple. A very old rock-crystal statuette of Buddha, which is said to have rain-making powers (the inhabitants of Chiang Mai process with the Buddha every year on 1 April just before the monsoon), and an 8C walking Buddha, which was a gift from Sri Lankan monks to the monarch. Once again, the wood carvings in this temple are remarkable (sanctuary).
