An extraordinary landscape extends from Zumaya to Motrico, with sheer-drop cliffs plunging steeply into the sea. The geological formations here take on a multi-layered appearance, alternating hard and soft rock that are testament to the violence of the elements when the mountains emerged over 60 million years ago. The top of the cliffs is occupied by characteristic heathland vegetation, perfectly adapted to the gusts of wind and excess salinity.
