The Michelin Guide's review
Every ounce of luxury that the unique hideaway of Schloss Elmau offers in the hotel and spa finds its culinary match in this restaurant. Chef Christoph Rainer draws inspiration from his travels to Japan and other Asian countries, as is reflected in the renaming of the restaurant, from Luce d'Oro to IKIGAI (the Japanese word means "a reason for being"). A love for Japan can be discerned in appealing details such as the elegant tableware, which includes decorative Japanese kokeshi dolls, but first and foremost when it comes to the food. Christoph Rainer consistently incorporates Asian and Japanese elements into his creations, which feature top-notch ingredients. "Unstuffed organic goose liver, ceriboshi, sakura miso, black cherry" is a highlight. A terrific wine list plus a nice selection of sake for pairing with the food. The service team come across as friendly and competent. The refined interior with its pared-back design and warm wood sets a sophisticated tone.
